Classic Car Original Style Restoration
Our restoration shop recently performed a color change on a 1964 Impala for a
customer.
His interest lied in that his father had purchased a ’64 Impala new with a black
exterior and red interior.
In recent years the customers father had found a car similar to his original
Impala, except for the fact it was a green on green car. The car was a nice
find; in that it was very original, and still had what was left of its original
paint and interior. However forty years without a repaint had produced issues
with rust that ranged from surface rust to through and through damage. The
entire car would need to be disassembled and each panel stripped to bare steel
in every nook and cranny.
Panel repair was then performed by cutting out portions of the panels destroyed
by rust and welding in new steel in those places. Prepared panels were then
treated with an acid primer corrosion inhibitor to protect the steel for many
years to come. All of the panels were then primed and made laser straight; a
super slick black finish would make this evident later.
The disassembly of the car, from the firewall forward allowed for a through
engine compartment detail and quality paint on inner fenders, radiator support
and other front assembly components. The disassembly of the doors for stripping
also allowed for a re-chrome plating of the window trim and inspection and
lubrication of the window regulators and latch mechanism.
Fresh hardware, nuts, bolts and screws were used in the reassembly of the car.
Stainless steel trim was polished before being reinstalled. Aluminum moldings
were replaced and chrome bumpers, door handles were either replaced or
re-chromed depending on availability. All of the weather stripping was replaced
including windshield gaskets, door felts and body seals.
While the entire interior was out of the car instrumentation, heating, and air
conditioning were thoroughly inspected and repaired to work like new. The dash
board, steering column, steering wheel and other interior trim items were
changed from green to red. New soft trim including door panels, seat covers,
carpet, package tray and kick panels were ordered in red and installed.
This black on red ’64 Impala is now ready to cruise down memory lane and roll up
to the winners circle at car shows.
